Overview
- Northern Railway’s Jammu division combines 1.745 MW already producing power with 808 kWp of new projects to reach about 2,553 kWp (2.55 MW) of installed and planned solar capacity.
- Work on a 450 kWp plant at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra began on September 12 and officials target completion by December 2026.
- The division is expediting 18 new solar plants totaling 808 kWp, including 13 units at Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur that together amount to 358 kWp and will start soon.
- Division officials say the solarisation will reduce dependence on the conventional grid, cut electricity bills by lakhs of rupees annually, and lower carbon emissions, with savings to be redirected to passenger amenities.
- Officials frame the drive as part of Indian Railways’ wider push for cleaner operations and note the 2.55 MW figure covers both already commissioned installations and projects still under construction or planned.
