Jammu Court Grants NIA Second 45-Day Extension in Pahalgam Massacre Probe

Pending forensic results are delaying the charges.

Overview

  • The court approved the extension on 30 October under UAPA timelines, after a first 45-day extension on 19 September, with the judge directing investigators to file the final report as soon as possible.
  • The NIA told the court it is awaiting multiple forensic outputs—DNA co-matching, ballistics, IED composition and digital analyses—while preliminary phone forensics have yielded Facebook profiles, photographs and Aadhaar details described as incriminating.
  • Devices seized from three Pakistani militants killed in the 28 July Dachigam encounter are end‑to‑end encrypted, and the agency said it is awaiting a judicial view on extraction while an officer has been sent to CFSL Chandigarh to expedite lab work.
  • The agency said the two Pahalgam residents arrested in June, Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar, allegedly provided food, shelter and logistics to the attackers and must be confronted with the pending forensic findings before a chargesheet is filed.
  • Defense counsel argued the agency has not produced direct evidence against the accused, and the court earlier rejected requests for narco-analysis and polygraph examinations citing protection against self-incrimination.
