Overview

  • Officials reported 32 deaths on the KatraVaishno Devi track after Tuesday’s landslide near Adhkuwari, with the yatra halted and search operations continuing.
  • Authorities said more than 10,000 people were evacuated as the Jhelum crossed flood marks in Anantnag and Srinagar and the Tawi, Chenab, Ujh, Ravi and Basanter ran above danger levels; the Madhopur barrage exceeded one lakh cusec.
  • Transport and communications were hit hard, with portions of NH-44 and key bridges washed away, 58 trains cancelled and 64 short-terminated in the Jammu division, and phone and data services restored after a day-long outage.
  • Army, NDRF, SDRF, police and civil teams are conducting rescue and relief, relief camps and community kitchens are operating in Jammu, and schools and exams have been suspended across the division.
  • A brief let-up in rain Wednesday enabled quicker restoration work even as the IMD warned of further heavy showers and landslide and flash-flood risks, and neighbouring Himachal and Punjab reported major damage including washed-out stretches of the ChandigarhManali route.
