Jamia Forms Panel to Draft Students’ Union Constitution After 20 Years

The five-member committee has a December 20 deadline to produce a constitution under the JMI Act signaling a legal review of how the union can be restored.

Overview

  • The university formed a five-member drafting committee on Wednesday, October 21, chaired by Prof Zubair Meenai and instructed it to consult students and other stakeholders and submit a draft by December 20.
  • Students have maintained an indefinite hunger strike since October 12 and are refusing to end the protest until the university issues an immediate 2026–27 election schedule, revokes pending disciplinary actions, and removes specific officials.
  • The Chief Proctor’s office said it will review disciplinary cases dated between October 12 at 5:30 pm and October 21 but warned that incidents after October 21 at 5:30 pm may attract strict action.
  • The university has deployed a medical team and stationed an ambulance at the Ghalib Lawns protest site and reported some protesters needed hospital care, including NSUI secretary Ebin Basil.
  • Tensions remain high after students declined to sign minutes of meetings held on October 20 and the administration alleged damage to campus property, a development that could lengthen the legal and administrative process to restore elected student representation.
