Jamia Constitutes Panel to Draft Students’ Union Constitution After 20 Years

The administration set a reported December 20 deadline for a legally grounded draft, a step students rejected as a delaying tactic and kept their hunger strike going.

Overview

  • The university on Wednesday put a five-member committee in place to draft a Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union constitution under Articles 23(J) and (K) of the JMI Act, with the panel asked to consult students and submit a draft by December 20.
  • The committee is chaired by Prof. Zubair Meenai and includes senior deans and the Dean of Students’ Welfare, and it will review the 2006 dissolution, relevant court rulings and the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations from 2007.
  • Student leaders rejected the notification because it did not meet their three demands—an immediate election schedule, revocation of disciplinary cases, and removal of the Chief Proctor and the Security Advisor—and said their hunger strike that began on October 12 will continue.
  • The administration deployed a medical team and stationed an ambulance to monitor strikers, and the Chief Proctor’s office said cases started between October 12 at 5:30 pm and October 21 will be reviewed while incidents after 5:30 pm on October 21 may attract strict action.
  • The dispute revives a long-running governance question since JMISU was dissolved in 2006 and could lead to legal review or court involvement as the university seeks statutory compliance while students press for immediate, concrete steps.
