James Walkinshaw Wins Northern Virginia Special Election, Trimming House GOP Edge to 219–213

The result tightens Speaker Mike Johnson’s margin before end-of-September funding votes.

Overview

  • Associated Press called the race at 7:36 p.m. ET, with Walkinshaw leading Stewart Whitson roughly 74.9% to 25.1% (about 99,049 to 33,326) with most votes tallied.
  • Once Walkinshaw is sworn in this week, Democrats will hold 213 seats to Republicans’ 219, leaving GOP leaders only two defections to spare on party-line measures.
  • Virginia’s deep-blue 11th District, centered in Fairfax County and home to a large federal workforce, had been vacant since Rep. Gerry Connolly’s death in May.
  • Walkinshaw, Connolly’s former chief of staff and a Fairfax County supervisor, campaigned on defending federal employees and opposing Trump administration cuts to government jobs.
  • Upcoming special elections on Sept. 23 in Arizona’s 7th District, Nov. 4 in Texas’ 18th, and Dec. 2 in Tennessee’s 7th could further shift the House calculus as key votes near.
