James McCaffrey, Voice of Max Payne, Dies at 65

Tributes Pour in for Beloved Actor Known for Iconic Video Game Roles

James McCaffrey, the actor known for voicing Max Payne in the popular video game series, has passed away at the age of 65 after a battle with multiple myeloma.
McCaffrey's voice work brought to life the character of Max Payne, a New York City police detective turned vigilante, across three games in the franchise, which has sold over 7.5 million units worldwide.
McCaffrey also had a cameo in the 2008 Hollywood adaptation of Max Payne, and voiced other characters in games such as Alan Wake 2, Control, and Alone In The Dark.
Tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues, including Remedy Entertainment’s Sam Lake, who worked with McCaffrey for over 25 years and described him as a 'lovely man', a 'dear friend', and a 'brilliant actor'.
Prior to his work in video games, McCaffrey had a 35-year career in film and television, appearing in shows like Viper, New York Undercover, Rescue Me, and Sex in the City.
