Overview

  • The James Madison Board of Visitors voted unanimously to apply for and accept membership in the American Conference, a move announced jointly by the school and the league on Monday.
  • Under the agreement, JMU will leave the Sun Belt and become a full American member no later than July 1, 2028.
  • American commissioner Tim Pernetti said the move adds valuable media inventory and that JMU made a sizable financial and commercial commitment to protect and enhance current members' distributions.
  • JMU brings recent on-field success and existing ties to the league, having reached the College Football Playoff in 2025 and already serving as an American affiliate in women's lacrosse and swimming and diving.
  • The American will have 15 football members after JMU's admission, creating an incentive for the league to seek a 16th school for scheduling balance and divisional symmetry.
