James Cameron Renews Sharp Critique of Alien 3, Says He Won’t Return to the Franchise

Cameron faults the film’s opening for undoing Aliens’ character investment.

Overview

  • In a Dec. 23 appearance on Michael Biehn’s podcast, Cameron called Alien 3’s opening creative choice “the stupidest f---ing thing.”
  • He said the move squandered audience goodwill from Aliens and swapped in a new group of convicts viewers “hate and want to see die.”
  • Cameron stressed he is a fan of David Fincher, noting the director’s first feature was shaped by a troubled, studio-driven process, which he said earns Fincher “a free pass.”
  • He ruled out any future involvement with the franchise, saying, “You couldn’t pay me enough,” while praising FX’s Alien: Earth as “pretty good” and saying he liked parts of Alien: Romulus.
  • Michael Biehn recounted discovering his likeness was used without prior approval and said he later negotiated to restrict it to an archival photo.
