Jalisco Confirms Identity of Magdalena Pérez López After 11 Years in Morgue

Activists demand accountability over forensic rules that stalled DNA matching.

Overview

  • The state prosecutor’s office notified the family in early November that the remains held at the Jalisco forensic service were those of Magdalena Pérez López.
  • Her body was recovered in December 2014 from a clandestine grave in Tlajomulco and showed evidence of beating and incineration, according to local reporting.
  • Relatives had filed a missing-person report, provided DNA, and repeatedly visited the morgue for years yet were not told her remains were in custody.
  • The forensic institute says routine DNA collection on bodies was not standard in 2014 without a Ministerio Público order and cites the calcinated condition of the remains; a new sample from her son in February 2025 led to a database match on October 24.
  • The Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco collective condemned the 11-year delay and pressed for reforms, while the state fiscal said ongoing genetic reviews of long-held cases produced the identification.
