He narrowly missed an eagle putt on the 18th hole, which would have tied the all-time PGA Tour record of 58 held by Jim Furyk.
Knapp's performance gave him a four-shot lead heading into the second round, with Daniel Berger, Russell Henley, and Sami Välimäki tied for second at 8-under.
The ideal scoring conditions at PGA National, including soft greens and minimal wind, contributed to the unusually low scores across the field.
