Overview

  • On July 15, 2025, a Jaipur sessions court suspended the one-year jail terms of Congress MLAs Mukesh Bhakar, Manish Yadav and seven others until their appeals are resolved.
  • The nine were convicted in June for blocking Jawaharlal Nehru Marg outside the University of Rajasthan during a 2014 student protest.
  • They were found guilty under IPC sections 147 for unlawful assembly, 283 for obstruction of a public way and 341 for wrongful restraint, each fined ₹3,000 under Section 147 plus ₹200 under Section 283.
  • Their assembly membership remains unaffected because sentences under two years do not disqualify legislators under Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
  • The court has set the next hearing for August 26, 2025, as the appellants pursue their legal challenge.
