Jailed GP Thomas Kwan Faces Tribunal to Decide if He Is Struck Off

Regulators will review his fitness to practise following his conviction for attempting to murder his mother’s partner.

Overview

  • A three-day virtual Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service hearing is scheduled to begin on September 15 and is listed through September 17.
  • The panel will decide whether his fitness to practise is impaired and could order erasure from the medical register or other sanctions, with a decision due within 28 days of the hearing’s end.
  • Kwan was convicted of attempted murder on October 7, 2024, at Newcastle Crown Court and was sentenced on November 6 to 31 years and five months in prison.
  • Prosecutors said he targeted Patrick O’Hara over an inheritance dispute, arranging a bogus home visit and disguising himself as a nurse to deliver a fake Covid jab.
  • O’Hara suffered severe injuries requiring weeks of treatment and plastic surgery, and he described being left a ‘shell of an individual’ by the attack.
