Jagex Reveals RS4, a New Unreal Engine RuneScape MMO

The studio says it will develop the years‑away project with active player involvement to modernize the franchise while keeping its existing games in place.

Overview

  • Jagex unveiled the new fourth RuneScape MMO at RuneFest in Birmingham, presenting a short teaser and confirming the working title RS4.
  • RS4 will be built in Unreal Engine and is set in Gielinor's Sixth Age, beginning in the Ashenfall region first introduced in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
  • The project grew out of a planned Dragonwilds expansion called Shadows of Ashenfall and is still in very early development with a release expected in a few years.
  • Jagex says RS4 will be developed with community input and will sit alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds rather than replace them; the studio also published near‑term roadmaps that include Dragonwilds updates and official mod support arriving in 2027 and the launch of RuneScape Reignited on December 2 with free access through December 12.
  • The company is expanding the IP beyond games with an animated adaptation produced with Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White and Lyrical Media, and the move to Unreal Engine signals a major technical shift for a 25‑year franchise that could broaden audience reach and enable more user‑created content.
