Overview
- Jagex unveiled the working-title RS4 at RuneFest in Birmingham on Saturday, releasing a short teaser and confirming the game is an early-stage, Unreal Engine MMO set in Gielinor.
- Executives said RS4 began as a planned Dragonwilds expansion called Shadows of Ashenfall but grew into a standalone MMO after prototypes and playtester feedback widened its scope.
- The studio positioned RS4 as a fourth, independent pillar that will run alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds, with separate teams and ongoing support for existing games.
- Jagex gave only high-level details: RS4 will start in Ashenfall years after Dragonwilds, is still ‘a few years away,’ and the company has not disclosed platforms, release date, server design, combat systems, monetization, or account/progression transfer.
- Alongside RS4, Jagex announced an animated adaptation produced with Lyrical Media and streamer Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White, and said it will involve the community in development while technical questions about scaling and persistent systems are worked out.
