Jagan Leads Narsipatnam Protest as Andhra Plans PPP for 10 Medical Colleges

The opposition argues the PPP model will price out poor students.

Overview

  • Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy inspected the under-construction Makavarapalem campus and led a large demonstration in Narsipatnam on October 9.
  • Information Minister K. Parthasarathy has confirmed the remaining 10 of 17 sanctioned colleges will be constructed in two PPP phases.
  • Jagan announced a one-crore signature drive with Rachabanda outreach from October 10 to November 22, followed by rallies on October 28 and November 12 and submissions to the Governor on November 23–24.
  • Citing G.O. No. 204, he said Makavarapalem was planned as a 600-bed, 150-seat college and claimed the expansion would take total MBBS seats to 4,910, including 2,360 free for poor students.
  • TDP leaders defended the PPP approach as fiscally necessary and accused Jagan of trying to incite unrest as the state moves ahead with phased construction.
