Jackson County Legislature Sets Public Interviews, Rules to Pick Interim Executive

The legislature adopted a public interview plan that limits legislator-candidates’ roles to address conflict-of-interest concerns.

Overview

  • Lawmakers approved Resolution 22072, with Vice Chair Donna Peyton designated to lead meetings in place of Chair and candidate DaRon McGee.
  • Public interviews begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in Independence, with three-minute openings and closings and two questions each from the seven non-candidate legislators.
  • Thirteen applicants were deemed eligible after two were disqualified for not sharing recalled Executive Frank White Jr.’s party, and each must submit a Missouri Highway Patrol background check by 10 a.m. Monday.
  • Legislators McGee and Charlie Franklin are candidates and are barred from questioning others but may vote after a recusal amendment failed.
  • Applicants are being asked to sign a non-run pledge for 2026 that cannot be enforced, and a vote could occur as early as Monday, requiring five of nine votes to appoint an interim through the end of 2026.
