Jackson County Chair DaRon McGee Exits Interim Executive Race; Public Interviews Set for Monday

The legislature will conduct public interviews Monday under new rules intended to increase transparency.

Overview

  • McGee withdrew Friday after new reporting on his 2019 Missouri House ethics case and after noting residents’ preference for a non-legislator to fill the role.
  • With McGee out, 12 applicants are slated for public interviews starting at 2 p.m. Monday at the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in Independence.
  • Resolution 22072 formalizes the process, requiring Missouri Highway Patrol background checks by Monday at 10 a.m. and setting three-minute opening and closing statements.
  • The rules bar sitting legislators who applied from questioning other candidates; Charlie Franklin remains a candidate and can still vote in the selection.
  • Lawmakers are asking applicants to pledge not to run in 2026, the interim needs five of nine votes to be appointed through Dec. 31, 2026, and Kay Barnes continues as temporary executive for up to 30 days.
