Big Bear Eagles Jackie and Shadow Welcome Two Hatchlings on Livestream

The hatchings kick off the group’s annual naming process led by local third graders.

Overview

  • The pair’s first chick emerged Saturday night, April 4, around 9:30 p.m., and the second hatched Sunday morning, April 5, around 8:30–9 a.m., all seen on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam.
  • Friends of Big Bear Valley said both eaglets look healthy and are eating, with Jackie and Shadow delivering small pieces of fish and other prey.
  • Early wobble and light headbutting are expected at this age, as the weak-necked “bobbleheads” practice feeding and sometimes “bonk” each other while they learn.
  • FOBBV will take public name ideas and then hand a finalist list to Big Bear third graders for the official vote, keeping a tradition started by the late Sandy Steers.
  • The nonprofit is also raising money to buy the nearby Moon Camp property to protect foraging habitat, with about $1.7 million raised toward a $10 million goal reported for a July 31 deadline.
