Jack Ball wins $100,000 Ramsay Art Prize with ‘Heavy Grit’

The trans artist’s immersive installation inspired by queer archives will join the Art Gallery of South Australia’s permanent collection

Overview

  • Ball was chosen from a record field of more than 500 entries and 22 finalists for the biennial prize awarded to artists under 40
  • Heavy Grit combines collage photographs, stained glass, beeswax, charcoal, copper pipe, sand and rope to evoke layers of queer history
  • Judges praised the work’s “restless, kinetic quality” and experimental processes that mirror Ball’s exploration of gender identity
  • The winning piece will be exhibited alongside other finalists at the Art Gallery of South Australia from May 31 to August 31
  • Established in honour of philanthropists James and Diana Ramsay, the acquisitive prize supports ambitious contemporary works across any medium
