Jack Anthony Young Charged in 1998 Pontiac Killing After Cold Case Break

Extradition to Oakland County is imminent following his Indiana arrest.

Overview

  • Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald charged Young, 45, with one count of felony murder in the shooting death of 73-year-old Charles Barnett.
  • Young was arrested on Nov. 17 in Mishawaka, Indiana, by the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and is being held in an Indiana jail.
  • Authorities say Barnett was shot after surprising a burglar in his Pontiac home on April 30, 1998, and the burglar crashed Barnett’s stolen car shortly afterward.
  • Detectives reopened the dormant case in 2020, and Sgt. Todd Hunt and retired Lt. Steve Troy linked Young to the homicide after reviewing evidence.
  • Young waived extradition and is expected to be arraigned in Oakland County next week; a conviction on the charge could mean life in prison without parole.
