A new wildfire has sparked near Hope.

Overview

  • The blaze ignited July 1 when a wheel ejected from a police dive team trailer on Highway 12 sent sparks into dry grass about 18 kilometres north of Lytton. BC Wildfire Service reports the fire remains out of control at approximately 155 hectares with no significant overnight growth.
  • Two unit crews, an initial attack team, four helicopters and heavy machinery are engaged in direct and indirect attack operations, including hand-ignited burns and water delivery.
  • Evacuation orders for three properties and alerts for nine more have been issued by the Thompson–Nicola Regional District, with additional alerts from the Lytton First Nation.
  • Officials warn the incident underscores the importance of regular equipment maintenance and fire awareness as the region confronts a persistent wildfire threat after the 2021 Lytton blaze.
