IV Lactate Replicates Exercise-Like Spike in pro-BDNF in Small Human Trial

Researchers call the effect preliminary, not a replacement for high-intensity exercise.

Overview

  • A one-hour intravenous sodium lactate infusion raised blood lactate to levels typical of medium to intense workouts in healthy adults.
  • Circulating pro-BDNF increased 15 minutes after infusion and stayed elevated for about two hours.
  • No changes were detected in mature BDNF in plasma or serum or in muscle pro-BDNF.
  • The randomized crossover study enrolled 12 volunteers aged 20–40 with an additional six saline-only controls and included frequent blood sampling and muscle biopsies.
  • The peer-reviewed findings in Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience prompt calls for replication, safety and mechanistic work, and cautious exploration of therapeutic applications.
