ITBP Expands LAC Footprint to 215 Posts, Plans 10 All-Women Outposts

The post-2020 forwardisation drive builds on newly sanctioned battalions alongside revamped training for extreme altitudes.

Overview

  • ITBP chief Praveen Kumar said the force now operates 215 forward-deployed border outposts, up from 180.
  • The force plans 41 additional forward bases along the LAC to strengthen security and coordination.
  • Ten all-women border outposts are being set up, with sites identified at Lukung in Ladakh and Thangi in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Training institutions have been reorganised with five new skilling modules, including mountain warfare and tactical survival.
  • The expansion follows the Centre’s 2023 sanction of seven battalions and a sector office—about 9,400 personnel—for operations at altitudes of roughly 9,000 to over 14,000 feet.
