ITBP Confirms Ongoing Face-Offs With PLA in Arunachal

The admission signals persistent patrol disputes that have triggered a drive to modernise India’s border forces and sustain military and diplomatic engagement.

Overview

  • ITBP Director General Shatrujeet Kapur said on Thursday that face-offs between Indian and Chinese patrols have continued at several locations in Arunachal Pradesh and remain unresolved.
  • Government and media reports say PLA personnel pitched tents near Asaphila/Taksing, roughly six to seven kilometres inside India’s perception of the Line of Actual Control, prompting raised Indian deployments in the area.
  • The ITBP is accelerating force changes by expanding Shaurya commando units, creating drone and anti-drone platoons and planning underground shelters, with 70% of a ₹400 crore tranche spent on drones and ₹1,000 crore earmarked from a larger scheme for drone programmes.
  • New Delhi and Beijing have used multiple channels to manage the tensions since July, including the 36th WMCC, the 25th Special Representatives talks and the first Corps commander-level meeting in the eastern sector in September.
  • The public confirmation has prompted opposition demands for fuller disclosure and could affect local patrol access and seasonal high‑altitude patrolling between June and October, while official sources urge diplomatic and military mechanisms to avoid escalation.
