ITBP Chief Praveen Kumar Given Additional Charge as BSF Director General From December 1

The Home Ministry order makes it a stopgap assignment until a regular successor is appointed.

Overview

  • Daljit Singh Chaudhary retires on November 30, creating the vacancy at the Border Security Force.
  • Praveen Kumar, a 1993-batch West Bengal cadre IPS officer, served over two decades in the Intelligence Bureau and took charge of the ITBP on October 1.
  • The order issued on November 28 assigns Kumar to lead the BSF in addition to the ITBP on a temporary basis.
  • The handover coincides with the DGs conference in Raipur on November 29–30, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participate after force chiefs reviewed operations in Bastar.
  • The BSF, with roughly 270,000 personnel, recently received two Vir Chakras and 16 gallantry medals for Operation Sindoor carried out under Chaudhary’s leadership.
