ITBP and Department of Biotechnology Forge Alliance to Boost High-Altitude Troop Health

The New Delhi memorandum of understanding sets a framework for shared studies into high-altitude health challenges at border posts.

Overview

  • On July 31 in New Delhi, ITBP Director General Rahul Rasgotra and DBT Secretary Rajesh S. Gokhale signed a memorandum of understanding formalizing their partnership.
  • The agreement targets health risks such as high-altitude sickness, hypoxia and extreme cold faced by personnel guarding India’s 3,488-kilometre Line of Actual Control at altitudes up to 18,700 feet.
  • Researchers will introduce remote diagnostic tools and telemedicine to isolated outposts to enhance early detection and treatment of medical conditions.
  • Collaborative studies will develop specialized nutrition packs and stress relief protocols to improve acclimatization and endurance in harsh environments.
  • The partnership will also focus on genetic adaptation research and design of cold-weather health gear and emergency medical kits tailored for high-altitude operations.
