Overview

  • Italy’s Court of Cassation dismissed Eni’s bid to block the case on jurisdictional grounds
  • The ruling confirms Italian courts can hear claims over greenhouse gas emissions from Eni’s overseas subsidiaries
  • Greenpeace Italia and ReCommon filed the suit in May 2023, naming Eni alongside government shareholders CDP and the finance ministry, which together hold a 31.8% stake
  • Plaintiffs invoke the European Convention on Human Rights and Italy’s international climate commitments in seeking accountability for past and future environmental harm
  • Environmental groups hailed the decision as a victory for climate justice while Eni said it expects to dismantle the claims at the forthcoming Rome hearing
