Italy’s Privacy Authority Rejects Resignation Calls, Cites Independence

President Pasquale Stanzione says only the board can dissolve itself as parties push for stricter appointment rules.

Overview

  • Stanzione said the collegio will not step down and called the accusations from TV program Report unfounded, insisting decisions are taken in full autonomy.
  • Opposition parties PD, M5S and Avs demanded an “azzeramento,” while Giorgia Meloni noted the current board was chosen in 2020 under PD–M5S and said the government lacks power to remove it.
  • The clash follows a confirmed €150,000 sanction for Report’s broadcast of a private audio involving Gennaro Sangiuliano, which the program countered with investigations alleging political ties and conflicts at the Authority.
  • Agostino Ghiglia denies any improper influence after being filmed entering Fratelli d’Italia headquarters before the sanction vote and disputes a claimed link between a Meta case and his contacts, arguing his vote was not decisive.
  • Several lawmakers and experts floated reforms such as a three-fifths parliamentary quorum for appointments, as the law allows early turnover only if a majority of the four-member board chooses to resign.
