Italy’s Births Fall to Record Low as 2025 Data Signal a Sharper Slide

Istat attributes the slide mainly to shrinking cohorts of potential parents.

Overview

  • Official 2024 figures show 369,944 births, down 2.6% year over year, with fertility at 1.18 children per woman.
  • Provisional January–July 2025 data indicate about 13,000 fewer births versus a year earlier (-6.3%) and a fertility estimate of 1.13.
  • Regional patterns diverge in the 2025 snapshot, with steep declines in Abruzzo (-10.2%) and Sardinia (-10.1%) and increases in Valle d'Aosta (+5.5%), Bolzano (+1.9%) and Trento (+0.6%).
  • Births involving at least one foreign parent remained broadly stable in 2024 at 21.8% of the total (80,761), with higher shares in the North and Center.
  • Mothers are older at childbirth (average age 32.6) and first births occur near 32, while births to non-married parents rose in share to 43.2%.
