Italy’s Ambassador Makes First Prison Visit to Alberto Trentini in Venezuela

Italian officials called the access a positive sign for ongoing efforts to secure the detainees’ release.

Overview

  • Telling reporters at the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Ambassador Giovanni Umberto De Vito was authorized to see Alberto Trentini and entrepreneur Mario Burlò in Caracas.
  • The ambassador reported both men in good condition, though thinner, after the consular meeting.
  • For Trentini, an aid worker held in El Rodeo I since November 15, 2024, this was the first in-person contact allowed, following only two brief family calls in May and July.
  • Tajani presented the visit as a welcome step, while other reporting cautioned it is too early to read it as a broader opening by the Maduro government.
  • Tajani also noted there are an estimated 10 to 12 other detainees with dual Italian‑Venezuelan citizenship, while Trentini is the only one with solely Italian nationality.
