Italy to Raise Motorway Tolls by 1.5% on Jan. 1, 2026

The move follows regulator guidance tied to inflation under concession contracts.

Overview

  • An interministerial ordinance from the Finance and Transport Ministries sets the update, effective 1 January 2026.
  • Transport regulator ART acted after skipped inflation adjustments since 2020 that it said violated principles of equal treatment, entrepreneurial freedom and proper administration.
  • Most networks, including many Autostrade per l'Italia stretches, will see a 1.5% rise, while the Salerno–Pompei–Napoli route will increase by 1.923%.
  • A few motorways are exempt from the hike, including Autostrada Alto Adriatico and Strada dei Parchi.
  • Transport Minister Matteo Salvini blames court rulings for the increases, the opposition accuses him of failure, and further administrative or legal friction remains possible.
