Overview

  • National and local administrations inked a draft inter-institutional accord on August 12 at the MIMIT to enforce full decarbonisation and the shutdown of coal-fed hot areas at the former Ilva steelworks in Taranto.
  • The agreement outlines health monitoring enhancements and job protection principles without binding timelines for electric furnace deployment or decisions on DRI plant and gas-supply infrastructure siting.
  • Parties will reconvene after September 15 when binding bids are due, to assess offers and resolve outstanding technical, location and employment guarantee issues.
  • Trade unions such as Fiom-CGIL and Fim-Cisl criticised the draft for lacking concrete resource commitments, clear transition plans and firm employment safeguards.
  • In parallel, Piedmont regional authorities submitted their own appeal to Minister Urso demanding guarantees for production and job levels at steel plants in Racconigi, Novi Ligure and Gattinara.
