Italy Sends Frigate After Reported Drone Strikes on Gaza Aid Flotilla off Greece

UN officials request an independent inquiry into the reported strikes.

Overview

  • Organizers said multiple drones caused a dozen or more explosions and damaged sails and masts on at least 11 of roughly 50 civilian vessels about 30 nautical miles off Gavdos, with no injuries reported.
  • Italy diverted the navy frigate Fasan for possible rescue and protection of its citizens and lawmakers on board, as Defense Minister Guido Crosetto issued a strong condemnation of the attacks.
  • The UN human rights office called for an independent, impartial investigation, and European Commission officials said any use of force against the convoy is unacceptable.
  • Israel stated it will stop any attempt to breach what it calls a lawful naval blockade and offered to transfer any aid via Ashkelon for delivery to Gaza, without commenting on the drone allegations.
  • Greek authorities said the flotilla reported the incident to the coastguard, an EU Frontex patrol approached a vessel in the area, and the group declined assistance.
