Italy Readies Security Package With Knife Ban and Tougher Policing Penalties

The Interior Ministry has closed the draft for swift cabinet review, setting up a parliamentary test for the governing coalition.

Overview

  • Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said the draft is ready for an upcoming Council of Ministers session before its submission to Parliament.
  • The plan is split into two texts—a decree for urgent measures and a bill for longer-term reforms—with press previews describing a 65-article package.
  • A nationwide ban on carrying knives with blades over 5 centimeters would carry 1 to 3 years in prison, with harsher terms in specified places and possible administrative penalties such as suspending a driving licence, firearms licence, passport or residence permit.
  • Measures targeting juvenile violence expand police warnings for ages 12–14, allow arrests and precautionary measures for minors caught carrying knives, fine parents for lack of supervision, and prohibit sales of cutting weapons to minors including online.
  • Penalties rise for street crimes and for refusing a police stop order, which could draw up to 5 years in prison, while the draft also limits judges’ review of migrant detentions, tightens family reunification rules, and—per Il Messaggero—adds tools such as stabilized ‘red zones,’ biometric stadium checks and undercover prison operations.
