Italy Publishes Official Speed-Camera Registry as Unregistered Devices Are Switched Off

The public list identifies 3,625 devices, with a missing homologation decree keeping many sanctions open to challenge.

Overview

  • After a 60‑day census under D.M. 367, from Nov. 29 authorities that failed to upload device data must deactivate cameras and any fines from unregistered units are void.
  • The MIT portal lists each device’s brand, model, serial number, decree details and exact location, enabling motorists to verify tickets and contest those tied to absent or mismatched entries.
  • Initial tallies from Asaps and the Lorenzo Guarnieri association count 3,625 devices nationwide, well below earlier public claims, with 3,038 managed by local bodies and 586 by the Polizia Stradale including Tutor.
  • The core legal issue remains unresolved because no implementing decree defines homologation criteria, and Cassation rulings since April 2024 invalidate sanctions from approved‑but‑not‑homologated equipment.
  • Municipal revenues are at risk — the top 20 cities collected about €203 million from speed enforcement in 2022–2024 — and drivers can appeal to a prefect within 60 days or to a justice of the peace within 30 days using the registry as evidence.
