Legambiente urges swift implementation of Italy’s National Climate Adaptation Plan after €11.9 billion in 2025 losses.

Overview

  • Legambiente’s year-end report, produced with Unipol, finalizes the 2025 tally at 376 events, up 5.9% from 2024 and second only to 2023.
  • The most frequent incidents were 139 floods from intense rain, 86 wind-damage events and 37 river overflows, while temperature-related records nearly doubled (+94.1%).
  • Landslides linked to heavy rains rose 42.4% and wind damage increased 28.3%, with 24 events disrupting trains and local public transport.
  • Lombardia recorded the heaviest regional impact (50 cases) followed by Sicilia (45) and Toscana (41), with provincial hotspots including Genova (16), Messina and Torino (12 each).
  • A persistent drought hit the South, especially northern Sardinia, Sicily and Puglia, pressuring farms and livestock and prompting local emergency requests, as Legambiente also warns of costs projected to reach €34.2 billion by 2029 and calls for a law curbing soil consumption.
