Italy Greenlights Record Recruitment of Over 54,000 Teachers

Regional school offices will start assigning PNRR-linked positions to fill vacancies before the school year begins

Overview

  • On July 14, Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara signed a decree authorizing 48,504 general and special-needs teaching posts for the 2025/26 school year.
  • A follow-up decree will formalize the recruitment of 6,022 Catholic religion teachers after the first competition for these roles since 2004.
  • Out of the new hires, 13,860 positions are dedicated to special-needs support to ensure continuity for vulnerable students.
  • Most appointments will be drawn from 2023–24 PNRR competitions (“Pnrr1” and “Pnrr2”) to meet European Commission recovery targets.
  • Regional School Offices will distribute contingents based on local vacancies and candidate rankings, with opportunities for cross-province placement if posts remain unfilled in home provinces.
