Italy Expands Blue Flag Beaches to 246 Municipalities in 2025

Overview

  • Italy now boasts 246 coastal municipalities and 84 tourist ports with Blue Flag recognition, totaling 487 beaches, up from 236 municipalities and 81 ports in 2024.
  • Lake Blue Flags dropped to 22 in 2025, with one municipality losing its recognition.
  • Fifteen municipalities were newly awarded, while five lost their Blue Flag status; Liguria saw a decrease to 33 awarded localities, while Puglia and Calabria gained three new entries each, reaching 27 and 23 respectively.
  • For the first time, municipalities were required to submit three-year Sustainability Action Plans for 2025–2027, focusing on mobility, community sustainability, and climate action.
