Overview

  • Matteo Salvini’s implementing decree took effect July 2, obliging drivers with prior BAC above 0.8 g/l to install EU-standard alcolock ignition interlocks.
  • The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will publish accredited installer directories and lists of compatible vehicle models on ilportaledellautomobilista.it to guide installations.
  • Alcolock devices block engine start until a zero-alcohol breath test is passed and must carry anti-tampering seals plus valid calibration certificates for roadside checks.
  • Recidivist drivers face a two-year alcolock mandate for BAC readings between 0.8 and 1.5 g/l and at least three years for levels above 1.5 g/l, with fines and license suspensions for non-compliance.
  • Sector associations warn that the estimated €2,000 installation cost, ongoing maintenance expenses and fitment issues on ageing fleets could prompt legal challenges.
