Overview

  • Italy’s Civil Aviation Authority and the Interior Ministry enacted the change on July 11, replacing mandatory gate-side ID checks with boarding-pass-only access for domestic and Schengen journeys.
  • Exceptions remain for flights on routes identified as sensitive to irregular migration as well as all departures to non-Schengen countries such as the UK and Ireland.
  • Airlines and airports report smoother boarding processes and faster aircraft turnarounds by leveraging existing airport entrance screenings.
  • Passengers must continue to show official identification at check-in and carry it for random spot checks or face the risk of being denied boarding.
  • Officials believe the streamlined approach could become a model for other European states aiming to balance travel efficiency with aviation security.
