Italy Closes Away Sections for Pistoia and Rieti as Rieti Ordered to Play Behind Closed Doors

The measures follow the Oct. 19 bus attack that killed driver Raffaele Marianella, with three Rieti ultras jailed on aggravated homicide charges.

Overview

  • Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi ordered away sections closed for Pistoia fans through Dec. 31 and for Sebastiani Rieti fans through the end of the season, with ticket sales barred to residents of the two municipalities.
  • The Italian Basketball Federation’s tribunal confirmed that Sebastiani Rieti must stage home Serie A2 games without spectators until the federal prosecutor’s preliminary probe window elapses.
  • A judge validated the arrests of Manuel Fortuna, Kevin Pellecchia and Alessandro Barberini, who are in custody on aggravated voluntary homicide charges after the attack on the Pistoia supporters’ bus.
  • An autopsy determined Marianella died from severe neck and chest injuries caused by a stone that shattered the bus window and struck him.
  • Marianella’s funeral is scheduled today in Cesano, with a day of municipal mourning in Rieti, and Pistoia Basket has opened a donations account and will allocate part of the next home gate to his family.
