Italy Braces for 24-Hour General Strike on Sept. 22 Over Gaza Solidarity

Rail operations will halt from Sunday evening as cities limit service to legally guaranteed windows.

Overview

  • Base unions including USB, Cub, Sgb, Adl and Usi-Cit have called a nationwide stoppage across public and private sectors covering local transit, rail, ports, logistics, schools and industry.
  • Rail circulation staff are set to strike from 21:00 on Sunday, Sept. 21, to 20:59 on Monday, Sept. 22, with only 6–9 and 18–21 regional train bands guaranteed and other services at risk of cancellations or delays.
  • Local transport agencies published protection windows and warned of suspensions outside them, with examples including Rome’s Atac (to 8:29 and 17:00–20:00) and Milan’s ATM (to 8:45 and 15:00–18:00).
  • Organizers plan more than 60 demonstrations nationwide and police forces, such as Bologna’s Questura, have prepared reinforced security deployments for large rallies.
  • Flights are expected to operate normally on Sept. 22, though further sector strikes are scheduled through mid‑November, including a 24‑hour aviation walkout reported for Friday, Sept. 26.
