Overview
- Decree published July 26 in the Gazzetta Ufficiale officially activates the requirement for convicted drunk drivers to fit engine-immobilizing breath-test devices
- Prefects will code licenses to impose two years of Alcolock use for offenders with blood alcohol between 0.8 and 1.5 g/l and three years for those above 1.5 g/l after suspensions
- Each device must meet EU ignition-interlock standards, undergo annual calibration and be installed on every vehicle used by the driver, including buses and trucks
- Offenders must bear installation and maintenance costs of €1,500 to €2,000, prompting transport associations to warn of potential legal challenges over affordability and vehicle compatibility
- Tampering or attempting to bypass the device carries fines over €600, additional license penalties and possible insurance recourse by companies for damages
