Italian Prosecutor Backs Extradition of Brazil’s Carla Zambelli

The case now moves to judicial review in Rome followed by a final decision by Italy’s justice ministry.

Overview

  • Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office said Italy’s Public Prosecutor issued a nonbinding opinion favoring Zambelli’s return to serve sentences imposed by Brazil’s Supreme Court.
  • Zambelli has been held in preventive custody at Rome’s Rebibbia prison since July 29 after Italian judges cited a grave risk of flight.
  • She was convicted by Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court to 10 years for the CNJ system invasion and separately to 5 years and 3 months for a 2022 gun-related case, with loss of mandate pending finality.
  • The extradition request under the 1989 Brazil–Italy treaty now goes to the Rome Court of Appeal, with potential appeals to the Court of Cassation before a discretionary decision by Italy’s Justice Ministry.
  • Her defense criticized the disclosure of the prosecutor’s opinion before it had access, calls the case political, and has pursued challenges including a filing to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
