- Italian football legend Gigi Riva, renowned for his extraordinary goalscoring ability, has died aged 79.
- Riva, who was known as the 'Rombo di Tuono' (Rumble of Thunder), scored 35 goals in 42 appearances for Italy, making him the country's all-time leading goalscorer.
- Riva played almost his entire club career with Cagliari, helping the team to its only Serie A title in 1970 and remains the club’s record scorer, with 205 goals in 374 matches.
- He was part of the Italy team that won the European Championship in 1968 and also played in the 1970 World Cup when they were runners-up to the great Brazil team featuring Pele.
- Riva also served as team manager of the national team from 1990-2013 and was instrumental in Italy winning its fourth World Cup in 2006.
