Italian Chamber Approves New Safety Rules for Pool Suction Systems

Unanimous vote creates technical rules for suction inlets, triggers immediate closure for breaches, establishes a fund for public-pool upgrades.

Overview

  • The Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the amendment to the Sport decree that sets mandatory safety standards for pool circulation and suction inlets.
  • The law requires that suction grilles, main drains and other inlet fittings prevent vortex or ventosa suction effects on any part of a swimmer’s body.
  • Inspectors can order immediate closure of any public or publicly used private pool that violates the new obligation until it is fixed.
  • A 4.725 million euro fund is allocated in the Ministry of Economy budget for 2026 to help pay for upgrades to public pools, financed by reallocating an existing MEF capital account.
  • The commissione Cultura’s text replaced an earlier proposal for mandatory caps for under-16s and leaves operational details and enforcement procedures to implementing guidance from competent authorities.
