Italian Car Sales Fall Again in July as Government Sets Aside €600 Million for Electric Vehicles

Private purchases dropped sharply in July, with commercial and electrified segments posting gains; the ministry has announced €600 million in electric vehicle incentives starting in September.

  • Passenger car registrations fell 5.2% year-on-year in July to 119,081 units, driven by a 13.3% collapse in private buyer purchases.
  • Light commercial vehicles rose 5.6% in July, propelled by long-term rentals (+12.9%), short-term rentals (+27.6%) and manufacturer self-registrations (+49%).
  • Electrified models outperformed, with battery-electric vehicles up 35.2%, plug-in hybrids up 82.6% and full hybrids up 10.9% compared to July 2024.
  • Chinese automaker BYD entered Italy’s top 20 brands with 2,268 registrations (1.7% market share), while Stellantis saw a 12.1% drop to 30,797 units and its share slip to 26%.
  • The environment ministry will deploy a €600 million fund for battery-electric vehicle incentives from September through June 2026, and UNRAE has cut its 2025 registration forecast by 25,000 units to 1.515 million.
