  • Italian lenders posted a 14% increase in net profit to €46.5 billion in 2024, bringing cumulative earnings since 2022 to over €112 billion.
  • Interest income overtook fees for the first time in years, accounting for 58.5% of total revenues while commission income rebounded 12.4% to €45.7 billion.
  • Sector revenues rose to €110.1 billion, up 7.2% year-on-year, driven by higher lending margins after ECB policy tightening.
  • Banks disposed of more than €17 billion in nonperforming loans during 2023–2024, keeping net bad loans at 1.5% of total with a 52.5% coverage ratio.
  • Improved efficiency lifted the cost-to-income ratio down to 53.2% and pushed return on equity up to 13.3% as banking operations normalized.
