Isuzu and Mazda Replace 1.9 Diesel With Cleaner 2.2 and Eight-Speed Auto for Australia

The upgrade targets lower fuel use to reduce exposure to Australia’s NVES penalties.

Overview

  • Isuzu’s D-Max and MU-X and Mazda’s BT-50 now offer a 2.2-litre RZ4F turbo-diesel (120kW/400Nm) matched to an eight-speed automatic, replacing the 1.9-litre entry engine.
  • Braked towing rises to 3500kg for 2.2-litre variants, matching the existing 3.0-litre models across the line-ups.
  • Idle stop-start is added to both the new 2.2 and the continuing 3.0-litre 4JJ3 engines, with claimed fuel use dropping to as low as 6.3L/100km and CO2 reduced across key grades.
  • Isuzu removes manual transmissions from the D-Max line-up and trims are reshuffled, with the BT-50’s 2.2 offered in XS grades including new 4×4 options.
  • Pricing rises across ranges, with the D-Max now starting at $36,200 before on-road costs and the BT-50 up by $450 to $1450, as orders open from October 1 for October deliveries.
